Update on our projects

I promised everyone an update and posting of more pictures. However, many many many things have haapened since I last posted anything for all of you followers.
First of all the health fairs do indeed continue and there will be pictures forthcoming.
As for the puppet programs, they have been on a bit of a hold as I have no 'puppeteers' to help me and it just cannot be done as a 'one man show'. I am diligently searching for helper and may indeed find some soon.
And, I did receive a phone call from our little patient who had the leg re-construction surgery in california and she is doing just fine. Has entered a school there and is 'shining' as only the young Grenadians can. I also heard from our little cancer girl from Chicago and she too, is doing just fine. The famililes have been thankful for all our diligence and follow-up...as well as the generous doctor associates of mine who were willing to give their time and talents to bless these children and their families.
All that said, I also have found myself in a bit of a quandry and recenlty found that I will be needing surgery. So this may be the last posting until all is well with me.
Know that I do love all of you who support me and my projects, who pray for the children and patients and the volunteers at the fairs and 'roving clinics' and also to the missionaries who were so eager to give of themselves to serve all of YOU!
know tht my thoughts and prayers are with all of you and know ew are all blessed.

Distribution of grant materials

Now for the update of the distribution of grant materials...
here is the 'skinny' on what has been actually distributed and we continue to do so...and as long as I can access grants, etc. we WILL continue to provide for the needy people.
Items distributed:
120 bales of clothing (this means that we accessioned over a few hundred thousand pounds of clothing for men, women and youth). they continue to be distributed among all the parishes. (pictures will follow at some point when we get the chance to donwload them...so keep on reading and looking)
50 bales of shoes ( this means hundred of pairs of shoes are being distributed...and they are great...especially the dress and sneaker shoes for the kids)
250 boxes of school supplies (these include kits of 10 in each box that has notebooks, paper, pencils and other school items all in a carry bag)
325 boxes of newborn kits (these include kits of 7 that has a small hat/cap, diapers, diaper pins, booties, baby soap and washing cloths)
280 boxes of orphanage kits (these had small toys like legos, laminated velcro counting sheets, spelling sheets, coloring books, small wooden puzzles, etc.)
310 boxes of hygiene kits (these include 2 towels, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant and washcloths)
we also accessed more wheelchairs (50- in 4 sizes) which are being given out to those who have limited mobility
and, last, there was a milk grant which had 20 (yes I said 20! and each pallet had forty five 40lb sacks) pallets of dried 2% milk. this is like gold here and is being distributed by the sack and also in small 2.5 lb plastic sacks. We have distributed alot of these itmes to church organizations who know the populace who are really needy, but also to the schools, nursing homes, etc.
Okay...yes there ARE pictures...but they are in storage right now and I will need to unpack them...but to give you an idea. I will put in the pictures of some of the items after we unloaded the 40ft container from the port...

It's time to catch up

It's time to let everyone konw what has been going on...It has been a REALLY long time, but that just means that we have been really busy since the last posting. Let me bring you up to date.
First... we received a rather substantial grant from the LDS church which allowed us to bring in a HUGE amount of items and then distribute them.
Second...the health fairs (clinics continue with the help of Ann and Ms Simon and the students and the SO's. Although there have not been quite as many, since the distribution of items from the grant took a great amont of time and effort...and since everyone is a volunteer, we need to keep all rested and ready to help
Third...the after-school program continues also with the help of Ann, Ms Simon and the SO's. The venue was slightly altered, but the kids keep coming and they enjoy the tutoring and the support and of course...the TREATS. (Many of these children only get this small bread and local juice for the day for their meal, so they so look forward to coming...and they love the learning too!)
Fourth...the dry-pack canning is still going far too slow, but it is difficult to change routines and storage preferences to metal cans (which will keep for 20+ years) as opposed to the muslim bags of provisions they have now. Perhaps another disaster will prove our idea and that it is worthwhile and much more advantageous than the current methods
Fifth...the children's puppet shows continue but also slowly...as our puppeteers continue to progress through their educational process and then we have to train new ones all over again. There are a but a handful of the inherent people who are interested or even wish to share their time...but I know the children and the parents appreciate the information...so I will continue to push them forward.

It has been a REALLY long time since I posted anything on this website. But it is not because of a lack of projects. Let me update you all.
1st the health fairs had to be put on hold until the new government reviews the needs of the people as they set their agenda for the island(s). However, thankfully through Ann and Claudia, they continue to reach out to the people in the small villages and areas doing basic teaching on hygiene and self care.
2nd, we were able to obtain a grant through the Church of Jesus Christ latter-day Saints in the amount of over $300,000USD in a HUGE container filled with clothing, shoes, hygiene kits, school kits, orphanage kits, newborn kits and wheelchairs. This arrived in November and has been being distributed by the wonderful missionary couple from the church in cooperation with my associates on the islands to many many families and individuals needing these basic items.
3rd, the puppet shows continue but with emphasis on basic (only) hygiene, handwashing and of course behavior, manners and school tips.
4th, the after school program in the Limes finished in December and is waiting to re-start as access to use ot the building we had previously is no longer available. We are waiting to hear from a church group and also to see what other sources are possibly available for these needy and learning hungry children. Thanks go out to the SO's from St. George's, especially Maria H and her associates for really helping out this last semester for these children. We anticipate again some SO's helping once we can get a building for the children.
5th, the Champs club has finished their TV presentations (all 13 series) and is thinking about possibly doing more in the line of healthy eating and more on behavior. Grants are being searched and perhaps this will come to fruition sometime this year or next.
Okay...that's all for now... I will put up pictures from the distribution of the LDS grant as soon as I access them and then keep you updated on the afterschool program, etc. as it happens.

We were very fortunate to receive some backing from UNESCO for a production for local television networks about children and health. This special series (13 programs) will have emphasis on viruses and HIV/AIDS. Come and join us as we follow the "KIDZ" and of course, me as we talk about germs and all that "icky GERM stuff"!

Another little Patient

This little patient has been dealing with her problem for quite a while now. We were lucky enough to have her referred to us for assistance. She will be going to Cook County Hospital in Chicago, to have evaluation and surgery for a ganglioneuroblastoma of the adrenal gland.
She is an incredibly bright and energetic young woman and definitely deserves an "Angel's hand up"!!

Many expressed satisfaction with the high caliber of speakers presenting at the conference. Among them was Dr. Courtenay F. Bartholomew, Emeritus Professor of Medicine/Director at Trinidad & Tobago, who spoke on The Experience of the Medical Research Council (MBR) in AIDS Research in Trinidad and Tobago. Dr. Courtenay Bartholomew is an associate of Dr. Luc Montagnier who received the Nobel Prize in Physiology in 1983, for identifying the virus that causes AIDS and then again in 2008, for his efforts in the fight against HIV and AIDS. Dr. Bartholomew himself has done extensive research in the region and was the first to diagnose a case of AIDS in the Caribbean. Attendees were able to benefit from his immense knowledge and research. Dr. Marianne D. Szauer, faculty at SGU, presenting on two topics: NNRTI's and their complications, and The Epidemiology & Current Treatment Guidelines in Grenada pointed to some alarming trends needing urgent attention. She pointed out that in the region, in 2007 there are about 230,000 persons living with HIV; of these, some 14,000 of these have died of AIDS–related illnesses and just over 30,000 were receiving antiretoviral treatment. The estimated number of children under fifteen years newly infected with HIV in 2007 was 1800 in the Caribbean, whereas in North America for the same year, there were less than 500. Grenada’s statistics are consistent with this trend and there is therefore an urgent need for increased education on HIV and AIDS. In her presentation on Puppets and HIV Education for the Children of Grenada, Dr. Szauer illustrated how this is already being effectively accomplished. She and her team of volunteers in a creative, fun way have the puppets dramatize a variety of scenarios to teach children the facts about HIV and AIDS. Already, over 900 children and persons have benefitted from the program. Commenting on the event Dr. Marianne D. Szauer said, “The conference was very very successful. It brought to the fore current knowledge of treatment, recent developments and medications that are available for countries throughout the OECS.” Provost Dr. Allen Pensick though that the symposium went well and that the information was very important and timely. Dr. Judy Nisbett, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Nevis; was among those who expressed keen interest in having a similar HIV awareness program in their home country. As the day concluded, all were convinced that they were more knowledgeable and better equipped to deal this social reality. It is hoped that there will be increased advocacy for the implementation of many of the treatments presented, to improve the quality of life of persons living with HIV in the region.

Diabetes on the Island

Diabetes is a problem on the three islands of Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique. Sometimes it is due to poverty, sometimes it is due to lack of knowledge, and sometimes it is due to self neglect. But, whatever the reasons, we are trying to help improve this by education programs about skin and foot care,as well as medication adherence, etc. and diabetes general counseling at the health fairs. We will continue to reach out and get into the many 'hill' areas of the islands and make a difference through education and medical care. So let's go....

Podiatry Outreach Clinics- There are so many diabetics on teh island...and they all need education about their skin and feet...So here we go!

It's that time of year...as we get ready for the holidays, we begin to take a look back on what we have done for the year. And so, that said, I was lucky to have someone put together a compilation of health fair pictures from all over the island that we have done from January now.
As I look back, and November rolls in, I think about all the people we have had the opportunity to help, meet, talk with, laugh with and even share some tears with...and I thank all of them from the bottom of my heart. In preparing for Thanksgiving in the US and just coming out of Thanksgiving in the islands...it is always good to review what we do, and what we can do BETTER.

Kids Puppet Shows and Project "EARLY"

Training continues and we are having FUN! The first thing most of the puppeteers find out is that it is ALOT OF WORK! Building muscles you never knew you had, and trying to have the puppet say what you are actually trying to say. But the best part of it all is that the children (and of course...not to mention the adults) are mesmerized by the puppets themselves. They listen and are incredibly attentive to what the puppets are speaking about. As we go around the island, look for new pictures of the puppets and their travels!

We were able to start our puppet programs and of course you have seen the Kids camp shots...but we also did a show at Kids Fest down in Grand Anse at the Spiceland parking lot. There were LOTS of kids, LOTS of noise, and of coures LOTS of fun with the puppets! Check out the pictures!

Well...it has finally happened! We will be starting the KOTB programs around the island, in the schools, in the malls, etc. I was excited to find out that the National AIDS Directorate on the island had approved the grant I wrote to help defray the costs of the program. Just so you can get an idea of the program, I am attaching a video which was presented t the Mexico City IAS (International AIDS Conference) to introduce the program. Thanks to Ms. Johns from Brainstorm Productions, you can view a short snippet of what our programs will be like.
(Please excuse the "puppeteers", as this was our first live performance with very little practice...me included)

About the Dry Pack Project

The Dry Pack Project was funded by the Church of Jesus Christ latter-day Saints. We intend to start processing canned provisions in #10 (105 oz.) cans including; rice, lentils, macaroni and powdered milk (2%) to start. We have been given approval by the NaDMA council for disaster planning, the Ministry of Health and the Prime Minister's Office.
We will be working in collaboration with volunteers and ultimately hope to use the disabled and challenged youth in a training program for skills using our canning process as well as getting them involved with dehydrating fruits, etc from their small farming efforts through the Ministries.
Not only will the dry pack canning serve to provide supplies for emergencies and disaster, we will provide supplies for large homes (nursing, children's, etc.) and other agencies who wish to purchase large bulk quantities from us with the ability to store safely the provisions over time from humidity and spoilage.
